IJIIS_TemplateCALL FOR PAPER

RELIGIOUS PLURALISM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

UNIVERSITAS HINDU INDONESIA, DENPASAR, BALI 6 DECEMBER 2018

BACKGROUND

Southeast Asia during the proto-history period was a dynamic region in terms of cultural development. Not only was this region a terminal for migrants coming from the Asian continent, it was also  a meeting point for major influential cultures, including major religions that competed for followers. In an effort to occupy the newly inhabited area, the migrants from mainland Asia developed their culture in the new host area, which later became the basis of Southeast Asia’s cultural development until the present time.

Currently, this supreme culture, the legacy of intercultural relations and ancient religions is threatened by the negative impact of globalization and the often disruptive effects of technology. Various threats that manifest as forms of intolerance, radicalism, politicization of ethnicity, and others, have arrived at our doorstep employing technology in manipulative ways. These phenomena lead to concerns of the nation disintegrating. However, such challenges are also faced by many nations around the world. Indonesia, as well as other Southeast Asian countries, need to anticipate such concerns by strengthening relationships between countries, and by strengthening the local wisdom embedded within their own cultures.

MAIN ISSUES

The idea of promoting the Dewan Kerukunan Nasional (National Harmony Council) as Indonesian “local wisdom” is one solution to all issues in the context of diversity. The main questions are: 1) how can identity politics become a mediation among diverse groups? 2) What is the significant role of local wisdom in the context of heterogeneity or diversity? 3) How to empower religious pluralism to face the globalized world? These questions will be addressed in the international seminar on Religious Pluralism in Southeast Asia.

AIMS

  1. To build a global discussion and dialogue among formal institutions and local customary institutions to seek common ground for the contribution to a harmonious life.
  2. To create objects that have the potential to empower religious pluralism.
  3. To develop guidelines for the implementation of anticipatory activities that will combat nation disintegration and threats to the life of the nation.
